University of Missouri Lap Pool

Columbia, MO

Full Remodel, Whole Pool Tile

Project Assessment
“What needed to be done”

Built in 2005, the Mizzou Aquatic Center at the University of Missouri houses four swimming pools, the most notable being the Olympic sized, 50-meter competition lap pool. Originally constructed of a solid concrete base with a plaster interior surface, the University decided to undergo construction to restore this massive lap pool in 2018.
The existing plaster surface was heavily mottled and coarse with obvious signs of rust from the supporting rebar in the pool shell permeating the plaster, giving a very unsightly appearance and desperately needing remediation. This issue was due, in part, to the plaster not being applied to the correct thickness in order to ensure its longevity and prevent the supporting rebar of the pool shell from water exposure. The University knew they needed a solution that would outlast their previous pool surface.
The facility needed to replace the existing plaster surface, calling for full removal of all 17,000 square feet of plaster to be replaced with brand new tile, an Olympic sized restoration. Having worked with the University of Missouri in 2013 on a full-scale renovation of their indoor grotto pool, Mid-America was awarded the opportunity to improve the Universities Lap Pool as well.

RENOVATION PLAN
“How it was done”

Surface removal was accomplished by hydro-blasting, stripping the pool of its old plaster coating and exposing the raw gunite shell. Because the indoor aquatics facility houses more than one pool, the demolition and construction process had to be completely free of dust and air debris.
This seemingly impossible request, was successfully accomplished by utilizing our Rhino Fast Tent. The massive tent surrounds the immediate work space, efficiently containing all dust and debris bi-products of demolition and hydro-blasting, while providing proper ventilation for work crews.
In additional to whole pool tile installation, the surge tank and pool gutters also needed attention after years of frequent use. Both were re-coated and new gutter grates were installed replacing the previous set. This large-scale project was completed after 12 short weeks, leaving this Olympic sized pool with a brand-new tile interior that will last through decades of competition.
Project Specifications:
Total Square Feet:      17,125 Ft²
Pool Shape:                Rectangle, 8 feet deep throughout
New Interior Finish:    Whole Pool Tile
