Project Outline

In 2012, Mid-America Pool Renovation restored the competition pool at Longview Community College, which had been plagued by a failing “cover-up” PVC membrane installed in 2006. The previous membrane-based solution failed within four months of its initial installation, leading to years of unsightly patches and structural issues.

Project Specifications:

Challenges Solved

  • Membrane Failure and Hygiene Issues:  The existing membrane had lifted, wrinkled, and trapped water, leading to the growth of mold and contaminants in the underlying felt padding. This was resolved by manually removing the material and using 40,000 psi hydro-blasting to sanitize and strip the shell down to the original concrete.
  • Operational Hazards:  Water accumulating under the membrane required a pump and a hose that ran across the deck, creating a significant trip hazard for users. The new fully-bonded INTER-GLASS® system eliminated the need for such secondary drainage measures.
  • Damaged Racing Lanes:  Previous attempts to repair the membrane using anchoring pins had severely damaged the original racing lane tiles. Mid-America installed new racing lane tiling throughout the pool prior to the final resurfacing.

Special Considerations

  • UHP Hydro-blasting:  To ensure a pristine surface for the new finish, a 40,000 psi Hydro-blaster was used to remove glues, molds, and undetected delaminated plaster that manual scraping could not reach.
  • Surface Preparation:  Because the removal of the old membrane and metal plates left the concrete surface uneven, specialized repair materials were used to fill "popped-off" areas.
  • Efficiency:  The repair materials were primed specifically to avoid lengthy concrete cure times, allowing the project to proceed toward the resurfacing phase more quickly.
  • Complex Layouts:  The project required careful coordination to reinstall racing lane courses that ran in both directions through the pool, ensuring the facility met competition standards.

From Our Team

“In 2006, because of a difference of $1,018 in Bids, Longview Community College installed a cover-up PVC Membrane instead of a fully-bonded re-surfacing system… within 4-months of installation the Membrane lifted… requiring closure of the pool, total draining and repair.”
