Project Outline

The Town of Ridgefield faced significant maintenance hurdles with its aging, previously re-plastered indoor community pool. After an extensive regional investigation into durable surfacing options, the community rallied to fund a permanent solution for their aquatic center.

Challenges Solved

  • Surface Erosion:  The original plaster finish was heavily etched and eroded, creating an abrasive texture for swimmers.
  • Material Delamination:  Numerous plaster "pop-offs" had occurred across the pool interior, which required filling with epoxy mortar prior to resurfacing.
  • Visible Structural Fractures:  A prominent structural crack spanned the shallow end of the pool, necessitating permanent sealing and reinforcement.
  • Heated Water Degradation:  The indoor environment accelerated the breakdown of standard cementitious materials, requiring a non-porous, reinforced composite barrier.

Special Considerations

  • Community-Led Funding:  Funding for the restoration was acquired through a joint one-year effort between the local community and the Town Council.
  • Accelerated Execution:  To minimize facility downtime, Mid-America dedicated two experienced crews to the project, completing the entire contracted scope in just one week.
  • Rigorous Quality Control:  Our team utilized high-intensity lamps for a detailed surface inspection to ensure all structural defects were addressed before applying the final system.
  • Athletic Modernization:  The project included the installation of new ceramic tile racing lanes and targets to restore the pool’s competitive functionality.

From Our Team

“After the investigation was complete, the Building Maintenance Manager… recommendation was for the INTER-GLASS® Reinforced Composite System. During a large public hearing and vote, the Town Council unanimously accepted the recommendation.”
