Memory Square Pool | Louisville, CO

Wave Divider

Project Outline

Initially constructed in 1990 as an addition to the local recreation and senior center, the Memory Square Park Pool was modernized to support an expanding user base. Following years of maintenance on a temporary PVC liner, the City of Louisville transitioned the facility back to a permanent, cement-based plaster finish.

Project Specifications:

Challenges Solved

  • Worn Membrane System:  The existing PVC liner had reached the end of its lifespan, showing significant wear and requiring numerous large patches to maintain watertight integrity.
  • Poor Lane Visibility:  Heavily worn racing lanes on the old liner had become difficult for competitive swimmers to see; our team replaced these with bold, oversized dark blue tiling.
  • Substrate Preparation:  Removing the liner exposed the original 1990s plaster and debris, which required a specialized mechanical process to prepare for a new bond.
  • Infrastructure Obsolescence:  As part of the surface overhaul, the team also refreshed the tile beds and replaced outdated skimmers to ensure modern circulation.

Special Considerations

  • Hydro-Blasting for Adhesion:  Our team utilized hydro-blasting to strip the original plaster surface to a rough substrate. This process produces the necessary mechanical bond to ensure the new plaster adheres permanently to the pool shell.
  • Custom Racing Layout:  At the City's request, new racing lanes were installed at a 12-inch width—double the standard 6-inch width—providing a bold visual presence for competitive events.
  • Aesthetic Modernization:  The transition from a patched liner to a hand-troweled, crisp white plaster finish completely transformed the "eyesore" into a clean, modern facility.
  • Precision Tile Work:  All waterline and racing tiles were removed, and the tile beds were brown-coated to create a perfectly level surface for the new dark blue frost-proof tiling.

From Our Team

“After several years maintaining their PVC membrane, the City of Louisville decided it was time to return to a more permanent and aesthetically pleasing pool interior, plaster.”
