Oakwood Country Club | Coal City, IL

Project Outline

Mid-America Pool Renovation undertook a comprehensive restoration to revive the aging facility at Oakwood Country Club. The facility’s medium-sized pool had suffered a catastrophic structural event when its deep end “floated” out of the ground, leading to widespread plumbing failure and persistent structural cracking. Our team stabilized the site, modernized the infrastructure to survive Illinois winters, and brought the entire complex up to current safety standards.

Challenges Solved

  • Structural Displacement:  The deep end had physically raised (floated) out of the ground; our team resolved this by cutting and leveling the top of the pool beam.
  • Failed Gutter Infrastructure:  Virtually all gutter plumbing had cracked and been covered over; the team excavated and replaced the entire system with new skimmer suction ports and main drain sumps.
  • Surface Inefficacy:  Previous attempts with pool paint and caulking had failed to stop structural leaks; these materials were abrasive blasted off to allow for a fully-bonded polymeric finish.
  • Unstable Decking:  The original concrete decking was outdated, out of level, and severely cracked, necessitating a complete removal and re-pour.

Special Considerations

  • Frost-Depth Engineering:  To prevent future thermal damage, plumbing trenches were dug to meet specific Frost Depth Chart Specifications and outfitted with Schedule 80 PVC.
  • Hydrostatic Pressure Relief:  Additional relief ports were installed in the shallow end to manage sub-surface water pressure during future maintenance cycles.
  • State Code Compliance:  To satisfy Illinois Code, a pre-fabricated handhold was integrated onto the edge of the open concrete gutter system.
  • UHP Surface Preparation:  The old finish was completely removed via abrasive blasting to ensure a pristine mechanical bond for the new INTER-GLASS® composite system.

From Our Team

“The deep end of this medium-sized, formed and poured commercial pool with open concrete gutters had raised (floated) out of the ground several years ago… Pool paint and caulking could not seal or stop the structure cracking that the pool was experiencing.”
