Project Outline

In 2009, Mid-America Pool Renovation completed a pool renovation at Anne Arundel Community College. The project was triggered by a catastrophic plumbing failure that necessitated a complete strip-down of the facility to evaluate its structural integrity.

Project Specifications:

Challenges Solved

  • Structural and Rebar Decay:  Upon removing the old tile, teams found large structural cracks and 25-foot sections of corroded rebar. These were resolved by replacing the rebar and using high-pressure epoxy injection to seal the cracks.
  • Main Drain Plumbing Failure:  The failed cast iron plumbing required the demolition of the deep-end floor to allow for the installation and inspection of new main drain sumps and plumbing lines.
  • Corrosion Prevention:  To prevent future structural failure, new rebar was primed with a zinc-based coating to inhibit rust before being encased in epoxy mortar.

Special Considerations

  • Custom Gutter Modifications:  An area of the pool wall was removed to install new entry steps, requiring the existing stainless steel gutters to be modified and polished to function with the new configuration.
  • Comprehensive Waterproofing:  To ensure the pool remained leak-free, a Hydro Ester Protection System was installed over the entire concrete surface before the new tile was applied.
  • Modern Lighting and Sanitation:  All 16 existing pool lights, conduits, and housings were replaced, and a medium-pressure UV filter system was installed to minimize chemical use and odors.
  • Aesthetic Continuity:  The facility was finished with 1"x1" tiles identical to the original construction to restore its professional appearance.

From Our Team

“The pool was filled and started, and is currently leak free and operating beautifully.”
