Project Outline

Established in 1907, the YMCA of the Rockies modernized its 1960s-era aquatic center to address severe structural decay and a dated aesthetic. The original small-tile finish had failed after decades of use, leading to dangerous leaks and significant damage to the underlying concrete structure.

Renovation Goals: Correct severe water loss, repair a hole in the pool floor, and brighten the facility's aesthetic from its original dark tile.
Services Selected: The team performed a total facility transformation by re-pouring deteriorated concrete, applying a custom Texture-Dek topping, and sealing the basin with the silky-smooth INTER-GLASS® system.
Background: Decades of use had led to widespread tile failure, exposing deep structural cracks and causing water to rot the substrate.

Challenges Solved

Basement-Level Breach: Chipped tile and rot were so advanced that a hole had formed through the pool floor into the facility’s basement.
Structural Delamination: The original 1' x 1' brown and green tiles were falling off the walls and floor, exposing active leaks throughout the basin.
Concrete Deterioration: The decking and gutter supports were comprised of crumbling, deteriorated concrete that required total removal and replacement.
Poor Aesthetic Environment: The original color scheme gave the indoor facility a dark and unappealing look that discouraged participation.

Special Considerations

Substrate Leveling: Our team removed loose tiles and filled the voids with smoothing putty and protective barriers to ensure the final finish was perfectly smooth with no evidence of the original tile.
Safety Demarcation: New navy blue transition lines were added to the pool floor to clearly demarcate steep changes in depth, bringing the facility up to modern safety codes.
Custom Deck Texture: The YMCA selected a custom Texture-Dek topping in "Bombay" color, specifically engineered to provide appropriate slip resistance for their high-traffic indoor environment.
Structural Reinforcement: The team utilized multi-axial fabrics to bridge cracks and reinforce the pool shell before applying the final INTER-GLASS® polymeric system.
Gutter Safety Transition: High-contrast tiles were installed along the gutter edges to provide a clear visual transition from the deck to the water.
