Project Outline

Mid-America Pool Renovation performed an emergency pool rooftop renovation at the Sheraton Hotel at Crown Center after a 2013 cold snap caused the concrete shell to suffer from severe thermal shock. The pool, situated directly above the hotel’s main kitchen, developed cracks that allowed melting snow to leak into the food preparation area below, forcing the kitchen to close. To save the hotel’s holiday season, our team worked through freezing temperatures to stabilize the structure and restore the facility in record time.

Project Specifications:

Challenges Solved

  • Thermal Shock Fractures:  Frigid teens-level temperatures caused the concrete to develop numerous leaks, which were addressed by routing, cleaning, and injecting the cracks with epoxy.
  • Kitchen Water Intrusion:  Melting snow seeping into the main kitchen had rendered it inoperable; this was permanently resolved by sealing the shell with Aramid fabrics and INTER-GLASS®.
  • Extreme Cold Weather:  To perform the work in sub-freezing weather, the team tarped the entire pool and used radiant heat to maintain a materials-friendly environment.
  • Critical Deadline:  The project had to be completed before the Christmas holiday rush, when the hotel was fully booked for festivities.

Special Considerations

  • Waterless Surface Prep:  Because of the freezing temperatures and the active leaks into the kitchen below, the team made the decision to remove old pool paint manually without the use of water, hand-vacuuming every square inch of residue.
  • Structural Reinforcement:  In addition to epoxy injection, the cracks were permanently sealed with high-strength Aramid fabrics to ensure structural stability.
  • Climate Control:  Handheld sensors were used to monitor temperature readings to ensure the concrete and materials remained at optimal levels under the tarped structure.
  • Multi-Vessel Restoration:  The project included the successful resurfacing of both the main swimming pool and the adjacent therapy spa.

From Our Team

“We made a decision to perform all the required work in completely dry conditions without the use of any water… The Project was successfully completed, pool filled with water and in operation a week before Christmas.”
