Project Outline

Mid-America Pool Renovation executed a full municipal pool restoration of the City of Burlingame, which had been crippled by a failing spray-applied fiberglass liner. The previous “quick fix” liner had no room for expansion or contraction, causing it to release from the substrate and pull away massive chunks of freeze-damaged concrete. Our team stripped the facility to its core, utilizing Hydro-Blasting and pneumatic reinforcement to provide a permanent, climate-resilient solution for the community.

Challenges Solved

  • Structural Material Release:  The existing fiberglass liner was failing en masse, taking portions of the sub-surface concrete with it as it delaminated.
  • Coping and Bond Beam Failure:  The pool coping was badly deteriorated and had released from the bond beam at numerous locations around the 10-foot deep irregular perimeter.
  • Subsurface Degradation:  Years of moisture trapped behind the unbonded liner caused severe freeze damage to the concrete shell, requiring total surface stabilization.
  • Joint Movement Issues:  The team had to cut and rebuild a previously filled expansion joint between the shell and deck to allow for proper thermal movement.

Special Considerations

  • Pneumatic Reinforcement:  The entire concrete surface and tile bed were reinforced with a pneumatically applied, quartz aggregate cementitious render coat containing fibers and bonding agents.
  • In Situ Cantilever Coping:  A new cantilever coping was formed and poured on-site, then finished with colored Kool-Deck to enhance safety and aesthetics.
  • Abrasive Prep:  High-pressure abrasive water blasting was utilized to strip all compromised materials and create a superior mechanical bond for the new finish.
  • Advanced Crack Sealing:  Every identifiable structural crack in the large pool shell was routed and filled with high-grade epoxy sealants before resurfacing.
