Mid-America Pool Renovation completely renovated the Olympic-regulated Recreation Center Lap Pool in Durango. This 333,000-gallon facility required precision work to maintain strict regulation standards while addressing a surface that had become significantly etched. The project was strategically scheduled during the center’s annual maintenance period, requiring a rapid turnaround to minimize facility closure for the community

Challenges Solved

  • Worn Membrane System:  The existing PVC liner had reached the end of its lifespan
  • Strict Regulation Standards:  As an Olympic-regulated pool, all work had to be completed without altering the specific dimensions or standards required for competitive swimming.
  • Surface Deterioration:  Extensive etching had created a rough texture throughout the basin, which was resolved through comprehensive surface preparation and a bonding agent application.
  • Short Turnaround Time:  The entire project needed to be finished within a very specific two-week maintenance window to serve the recreation center's members.
  • Seamless Transitions:  To prevent bulging, the team carefully chipped around existing waterline tiles and fittings, ensuring the new SunStone surface was perfectly flush.

Special Considerations

  • Time-Effective Tiling:  The most efficient solution for the 1,350 square feet of racing lanes was to leave the sound existing tile in place and set the new blue tiles directly on top.
  • Color Modernization:  During the tiling process, the pool's original red racing lanes were updated to blue to refresh the facility's competitive appearance.
  • Adhesion Protocol:  A specialized bonding agent was applied to the entire gunite shell to guarantee the permanent adhesion of the new aggregate finish.
  • Phased Application:  The final SunStone Antigua finish was hand-applied over a concentrated two-day period following the structural and tiling prep work.
