As part of a larger renovation of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs aquatic facility, the university sought to restore the appearance and long-term performance of its indoor competition pool. During the preconstruction evaluation, Mid-America Pool Renovation identified that the existing finish had multiple layers of plaster with widespread delamination, or “pop-offs,” making a standard replaster insufficient.
Mid-America worked closely with the university to develop a renovation scope that addressed the underlying issues while aligning with their budget and long-term goals. By recommending complete hydroblasting and a new interior finish, along with targeted upgrades throughout the pool, the team helped deliver a solution designed to last and backed by a warranty the university could rely on.
During the preconstruction evaluation, it was determined that the existing plaster could not simply be resurfaced. Two deteriorated layers of plaster had lost their bond with the underlying concrete shell, requiring complete removal before a new finish could be installed.

This project was completed alongside several other improvements taking place throughout the natatorium, requiring close coordination with multiple contractors and a flexible installation schedule. Although the resurfacing was originally planned during the university’s holiday break, Mid-America adjusted its schedule to accommodate delays from other trades, ensuring the work was completed without compromising quality.
Replacing the pool coping added another layer of complexity. Before the continuous concrete pour could begin, the crew installed new anchors, completed the required electrical bonding, and carefully prepared the perimeter of the pool. Due to the indoor location and limited access points, concrete placement required careful coordination and manual handling to move material into position. The finished coping not only improved the durability of the pool but also created a brighter, more updated appearance throughout the facility.
Our work on the UCCS athletic pool successfully contributed to the university’s larger facility modernization, delivering a highly durable swimming space built for heavy campus use.
